Virtual disks of TRS-80 "Disk Operating Systems"
This page contains Model 1, III, 4 and 4P Disk Operations Systems. These virtual disks are, in most cases, the original distribution disks converted to virtual disk. These virtual disks can be used with my emulator or to make real TRS-80 disks (on PCs with compatible drives) for use on a real TRS-80.
TRS-80 Model 1 Disk Operating Systems
TRSDOS - DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM - VER 2.1 DOS READY _ |
TRSDOS
The first major TRS-80 operating system. This is a must be experienced operating system to truly remember how primitive it really was in the early days of personal computing. |
TRSDOS - DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM - VER 2.3 DOS READY _ |
TRSDOS
This was Radio Shack's second major release of their TRSDOS operating system. Many of the serious bugs were fixed in this version and there were several enhancements made. |
TRSDOS
Radio Shack's double density operating system. This version is pretty much a Model 1 version of TRSDOS 1.3 for the Model III. The version posted here is a Percom Doubler patched version, Anyone with an original version please contact me. |
LDOS
One of nicest and easiest operating systems to use. Available late (after the Model III release) this operating system has many of the features found in operating systems of today (like PCDOS). With support for hard drives and compatibility with the Model 4's TRSDOS 6x (licensed version of LS-DOS) this operating system gave users a true taste of things to come. While during the TRS-80 days my favorite OS was NewDOS/80 (because of it's total flexibility) now in the days of the emulator with hard drives standard, LDOS and LS-DOS are my operating systems of choice. |

NEWDOS - DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM - VER 3.0 THE BOOT, DIR, SYS0-SYS6 AND FORMAT PORTIONS OF THIS DOS ARE BASED UPON THE ORIGINAL MODULES OF TRSDOS 2.1 ORIGINALLY COPYRIGHTED BY RANDOLPH COOK, 1978. UPGRADES AND ALTERATIONS ARE BY APPARAT, INC. DOS READY _ |
NEWDOS
Plus
Produced by Apparat,
NewDOS+ is basically a reworked version of the TRSDOS 2.1
operating system. NewDOS+ came with several nice
utilities but it's nicest feature was the fact it was bug
free, giving TRS-80 users their first taste of error free
disk operations.
Double-Zap/II Double-Zap/II is a double density modification for NEWDOS 2.1+. Distributed by OMNICOMP, it enables NEWDOS+ to use a Percom double density controller. |
NEWDOS/80 Apparat had many releases of their NewDOS operating system before this, their best. This version gave users true power to control their TRS-80. Perfect for the power user with a non-standard system. Once the user understood the PDRIVE and SYSTEM commands they had full control of their TRS-80. This system could exchange data between all Model 1 and Model 3 operating systems and between dissimilar systems without the need to convert first to an interchange format. While being the most complicated OS to use it was also the most flexible and popular among TRS-80 power junkies. |
DBLDOS - DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM - VER 4.34 ORIGINAL DOS COPYRIGHTED BY TANDY CORPORATION DOUBLE DENSITY ADAPTATION COPYRIGHT 1980 BY PERCOM DATA CO. INC. DOS READY _ |
Double
DOS
This DOS was distributed with Percom's double density controller. |
DOSPLUS Said to be the first serious double density Model 1 operating system. |

ULTRADOS DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM VERSION 4.2 DOS READY _ |
UltraDOS
This DOS is very similar to NEWDOS Plus. It also came with lots of nice utilities.

BACKUP - VTOS DISK BACKUP
UTILITY - VER 3.0 COPYRIGHT (C) 1979 RANDOLPH COOK, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED *** THIS IS YOUR 'MASTER' VTOS 3.0 DISKETTE *** *** MAKE A BACKUP 'SYSTEM' DISK TO RUN FROM *** DESTINATION DRIVE NUMBER ? _ |
VTOS - VIRTUAL TECHNOLOGY'S
OPERATING SYSTEM - VER 3.0 COPYRIGHT (C) 1979 RANDOLPH COOK, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DOS READY _ |
VTOS
This system was written by Randy Cook (the writer of TRSDOS). It is pretty much a patched version of TRSDOS with a few new features. It was more stable than TRSDOS but was distributed on a protected disk making it a pain to backup and limiting it's popularity. The virtual disk is in it's original protected form. This virtual disk requires at least version 5.00 of the emulator to run. |
TRS-80 Model III Disk Operating Systems
TRSDOS
Model III TRSDOS was a
great advancement over Model 1 TRSDOS. |
LDOS
One of nicest and easiest operating systems to use. The Model III release has many of the features found in operating systems of today (like PCDOS). |

NEWDOS/80
Version
2.0
|
Model 4P bootable NEWDOS/80 The Model 4P versions of NEWDOS/80 have a special MODELA/III ROM image file that allows them to boot on the Model 4P. The 4P versions will boot on a Model III, 4 or 4P system. The MODELA/III file is the standard TRSDOS v6.xx file that has been padded and placed on the NEWDOS/80 disk so it aligns with LDOS's six sector/granule structure. The file also has 3 sectors of a LDOS DIR/SYS embedded in it so that it aligns with a real track boundary. The 3rd byte of sector 1 on track 0 (boot sector) has been modified to point to the embedded LDOS directory in the MODELA/III file. This byte is not used by NEWDOS/80 since it uses the 3rd byte of sector 0 to find the directory lump. During a Model 4P boot this byte is used to find the directory track of an LDOS disk, search for the MODELA/III file entry and then load the MODELA/III file. Pointing the 3rd byte at the embedded LDOS directory allows the 4P to find the MODELA/III file and load it. The 4P version of NEWDOS/80 can be used almost exactly like the regular version of NEWDOS/80, but because of the exact placement of the MODELA/III file on the 4P disk and the 1 byte modification of the boot sector certain guidelines must be obeyed or the original disk or its copies will be unbootable on a Model 4P.

TRS-80 Model 4 Disk Operating Systems
TRSDOS
Model 4 version of
TRSDOS. Written by Logical Systems (writers of LS-DOS). |
SIX2XTND(C) Version 1.2.2 06/06/87 - UPDATE FOR TRSDOS 6.2.x Model 4 This software consisting of a set of patches and a conversion program will enable you to continue to use your TRSDOS 6.2.x operating system past 1987 to the year 2092. The USER password has been eliminated, but all other passwords remain. These patches are on a TRSDOS 6.2x data virtual floppy (.DSK). Read the docs in the .ZIP and on the .DSK for more info on what the patches do and how to apply them. I applied this patch to both my TRSDOS 6.20 and 6.21 operating systems without problems (read the instructions carefully).

LS-DOS
Model 4 version of LDOS. Basically the same as TRSDOS 6.2 but with many bug fixes and enhancements most important of which is system dates well into the 21st century. |

CP/M
Plus
Model 4 version of CP/M
Plus by Digital Research licensed to Tandy Corp. Special thanks to Dennis Yutani for sending me the disks for conversion. |
This version of CP/M supports RS hard disks and under v5.5 of the emulator and can access up to four 5meg virtual hard disks. Create and mount a 5meg HD (153 cylinders 4 heads) and then run CPMINIT.COM (found on disk #5) to initilize the CP/M directory. By default HDs 0,1,2 & 3 are E:, F:, G: & H:. This CP/M may also be able to access larger HDs but I'm unfamiliar with generating CP/M. It may also be possible to put a system on the first virtual HD so that in Model 4P mode the emulator can boot CP/M from the HD. |
