Request: xtrs now emulates graphics cards for the Model I and Model 4/4P, but not for the Model III. I believe there were Model III versions of the both the Micro Labs Grafyx Solution and the Radio Shack graphics card that worked in a Model III, but Tim don't have any specs for them. If you do, please email Tim Mann.

  • Jon Bokelman has updated his WinAmp plug-in - if you downloaded it yesterday (filename in_orch.zip) please re-download.
  • The TRS-80 Documentation Page has been updated to include JPeG manuals of the Model I Expansion Interface and the Model I Mini-Disk Drives.

  • May 22, 2000
  • Excuse my language, but HOLY CR-P!!! Jon Bokelman, of Orchestra 80/85/90 fame, has written a WinAmp plugin for Orchestra 80/85/90 songs. It works like a champ. Download winamp and the plug-in ... copy the DLL file from the plug-in into your \Program Files\Winamp\Plugins directory, restart WinAmp, and play your orchs! Thanks Jon!
  • The TRS-80 Documentation Page has been updated to include the software manuals I have.

  • May 19, 2000
  • All 3 mirrors should be back online, and the ender.com mirror will no longer mangle the files. If you get an error today, it just means I have not yet fixed the CGI.
  • The new documents are online ... and are probably scattered thru the models and docs pages. Thanks to Wade for his scans.
  • Tim Mann has updated his XTRS emulator.
Version 4.1 adds emulation of the Radio Shack hard disk controller hardware.
With this emulation, all drivers for the original hardware should work,
including the TRSDOS6/LS-DOS/LDOS drivers RSHARD (tested) and TRSHD (tested),
the Montezuma CP/M drivers (tested), drivers for other operating systems
(untested), and the Model 4P boot ROM (tested).

Hard disk images using the new emulation are interchangeable with other
emulators and with xtrs's old hard drive emulation. The old emulation
(an xtrs-specific driver just for TRSDOS6/LS-DOS/LDOS) still works, too.

Version 4.1 of xtrs also includes several bug fixes and minor improvements
in other areas; see the included ChangeLog log for details.

xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the
X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, the Model
4 hi-res graphics option, mouse support, sound and music support (requires
OSS), cassette support, 5" and 8" floppy disk drives, and even hard disk
drives. Unlike many Model I emulators, xtrs supports double sided, double
density floppies, emulating both the Percom and Radio Shack Doubler. The
emulated floppy and hard disk file formats are compatible with the popular
MSDOS-based emulators by Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil,
and (if you choose a capable enough file format), all features of the
original TRS-80 floppy disk controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical
floppy disk drives are also supported. Physical cassettes can even be
read and written, with luck. The user interface is a bit spartan, but
    it gets the job done.

  • Lord Praetor Satanus of Acheron a/k/a Lord Spambraticus of Borg a/k/a Lord Satanus Emperor of Acheron has done it again. Lord has created a CGI script which randomly selects a mirror. This means there is no need for the [1/2/3] links following each file. This also means that the size of the download pages are DRAMATICALLY (50%) reduced. Only the Model I pages have been updated, though.

  • I have gone through the 18 AI Lunar Lander copies, put them in two archives - 1980 and 1981. Bad dumps and dupes were deleted. The Model IV version is still separate.

  • The Charles Dills disks have been converted ... 37 of the 43 without error. Since these are much easier than the German files (which I still have 30+ disks to go thru), I expect them to be online soon. They are not new, per say, although some are. What they are is .DSK images of Tandy ORIGINALS!!!!
  • The Adventure page has been reconditioned.
  • A new Library Page has been added. It is (going to be) a list of TRS-80 books, manuals and materials which I have in paper form.
  • When all the smoke cleared, 98 files/.DSK's were created. I hope to post those tonight (the links tonite, the upload probably tomorrow). I will try to convert the 4 disks of Model 1 files on a Model 4 tonite. I do not know what to do with the 2 copy protected disks.

  • April 30, 2000
  • I have added some other FAQ and Walkthroughs to the Adventure Page.
  • Since I don't have a mac (but do use FUSION mac emulator), this one got by me ... Yves Lempereur had updated his Model I emulator for the mac to v1.6 (non beta) in July of 1999. It is posted on the Emulator page
  • Charles E. Dills of San Luis Obispo, California has made an amazing donation ... new harsare, books and manuals, and disks. Books/Manuals to be listed here soon.

  • For those of you who may have had some download trouble, I had mistakenly deleted what I thought was a useless directory, and the scripts linked off it. The directory is back, and Lord Praetor Satanus of Acheron (who found the problem to begin with, and who hosts one of the mirrors) has re-written my 4K scripts to 400 bytes and removed the dependency. Thanks Lord.

  • David Keil is still at it. His proposed v6.0 emulator will have
  • Hardware hard drive support (now other DOSs can use virtual hard disks)
  • Hardware emulation of the RS-232 interface using a PC COMM port.
  • Audio cassette recorder that can load real tapes directly using a SB compatible card and cassette player. That can load Wave files created with a Windows sound editor. That can record Wave files of the cassette audio output of the emulator. These recording can then be used in Windows or if the output was a CSAVE, it can be CLOADed (system tapes work too).
  • Ability to configure the Memory, FDC, EI and ROM / Model type.
  • Ability to load /CMD files directly from a PC directory.
  • Better PC to TRS-80 I/O features along with a better XFER/CMD utility.
  • New Multiplication & Division instructions added for Z80 programmers.
  • Improved SoundBlaster cassette/Orchestra-90 & VS-100 sound.
  • Plus many more enhancements & minor bug fixes.
  •
  • David Keil is thinking about writing a LNW-80 emulator! He now has the ROM and DOCs needed, but wants to get v6.0 of the TRS-80 emulator out first.

  • John Renfro Davis has appeared on the scene. His email address has been added to the Orch page. You may remember that Mr. Davis created a TON of our favorite orch files.
  • My phone works again. It went out 3 days ago, and Pacific Bell wouldn't schedule a service call for 3 days. They insisted it is internal (as they all do). It was outside, and I didn't have to be here. Damn utilities.

    April 2, 2000
Tim Mann has released xtrs version 4.0, a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the X Window System, from his TRS-80 Web page or from the Emulator page
Version 4.0 adds emulation of the Orchesta-85 and Orchestra-90 sound synthesizers, emulation of the TimeDate80 and other battery-backed clocks, a -scale option to make the window larger, support for Level I cassette storage in .CAS files, and a pile of bug fixes.
For those of you living in a cave for the past few years, xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, the Model 4 hi-res graphics option, mouse support, sound and music support (requires OSS), cassette support, 5" and 8" floppy disk drives, and even hard disk drives. Unlike many Model I emulators, xtrs supports double sided, double density floppies, emulating both the Percom and Radio Shack Doubler. The emulated floppy and hard disk file formats are compatible with the popular MSDOS-based emulators by Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil, and (if you choose a capable enough file format), all features of the original TRS-80 floppy disk controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical floppy disk drives are also supported. Physical cassettes can even be read and written (when the phase of the moon is right).

    March 25, 2000
Added Change DiskDisk Utility v1.0 (/CMD) - Irwin B. Burton (1993) to the Model 4 Page.

    March 23, 2000
Scott Adams' email address and web page have been updated.

    March 20, 2000
David Keil has also finished RS232 support for v5.5. Now the emulator can use a standard PC serial port. It can access another PC or a real TRS-80 via RS232 and xfer files (for those without 5.25" drives).

    March 18, 2000
David Keil has been working on hardware emulation of RS hard disks. Version 5.50 will have some of the following features:
  • Shift F9 brings up the hard drive selection screen, it works just like the floppy disk selection screen.
  • F11 now brings up the virtual cassette screen.
  • F12 stops and single steps the CPU and Shift F12 restarts the CPU.
  • Pushing 'ENTER' in the disk selection screen brings up the point and shoot file selection just like before. Pushing 'INSERT' brings up a window to enter a virtual disk filename (NEW).
  • Shift Tab and the 0-3 keys work in the disk selection screen to ease disk selection.
  • Virtual hard disks entered on the NEW selection screen work with RS hard disk drivers. Hard disks entered in the configuration screen work with the EHARD/DCT driver. The same virtual hard disk is compatible with both types of drivers, even at the same time (drive :4 could use EHARD and drive :5 could use RSHARD6 with the same file, even at the same time, but don't do that.). RSHARDx or TRSHDx require you to enter the number of heads and cylinders. To use an existing .HDV file you must enter the correct values. A 202/203 cyl 256 sector/cyl .HDV file would have 8 heads and 202/203 cylinders (15meg virtual disk). The number of sectors per cylinder divided by 32 is the number of heads. Hard drive partitioning up to 1024 cylinder 8 head drives are supported. You cannot partition the drive if you want compability with existing HDV files or other emulators. The new hard drive support is not needed to use existing .HDVs but is for DOSs other than LDOS/TRSDOS. When in 4P mode a properly patched LS-DOS can even boot from the virtual HD (using real 4P ROM image). You can create a virtual HD in the virtual HD selection screen. A disk created here can be used with EHARD or RSHARD? drivers (or other emulators). The emulator writes and uses a compatible .HDV header. Drives over 203 cylinders are not compatible with other emulators.
To format a disk using RSHARDx you must use RSFORMx (not format). Use the command:
    			RSFORM6 (SYSTEM=YES,VERIFY=NO)

for example. This will write the directory and not format or verify the disk. If you don't enter the SYSTEM=YES then the disk will be virtually formated (doesn't do anything, but wastes time). If you don't enter the VERIFY=NO then the system will write and read every virtual disk sector. This taks a LONG time and allocates the entire HD file (a 15meg .HDV file would be 15megs in size even with no files on it). Half the filesize will be allocated on the PC since HDFORM writes the directory midway on the HD. I have a patched RSFORMx that puts the directory on cylinder 1 to eliminate this waste of space on an empty HD.
  • The RS CP/M v3 will support four 153 cyl 4 head virtual hard disks (5meg). Just create and mount a 153 cyl 4 head virtual disk, boot RS CP/M, run CPMINIT, found on disk #5, copy files to the HD using PIP. Drive E,F,G & H are drives 0,1,2 & 3.

  • I deeply appreciate all the Teknosurf clicking which is going on - the site is almost self supporting, so please keep it up. I did get asked, however, to ask whoever out there is on CERFnet (with a fixed IP address) to please stop clicking hundreds of times. Only the first click per day for each IP address counts, and while people with dial-up accounts can click with each new login, they are getting upset that this individual is stacking the odds. I do appreciate every click, but they are getting mad. Please click every (or every new dialup login), but only once.

  • Happy New Year!! I wish you all the best in the coming year, and I thank you all for your support of the site over these past few years!
  • Right now I am in Las Vegas - one of the few cities that can get away with charging $100 per person for the honor of standing out in the cold (40 degrees, which may not be cold to a lot of you) for 5 hours! What boggles my mind is that they got it! Instead of our normal trek to Downtown this year, we went to the Palace Station hotel and casino. It was very nice - since it is not on the strip or downtown, the visitors didn't quite make it there, so there were plenty of open $5 tables, and they had a free party!
  • MESS was just updated to beta 13 - I will have it online when I get back.
  • A little warning for the group - if you are gonna buy online, don't do it from DVD Wave.
