Australian pennies dated 1956 were minted in Melbourne and Perth and the reverse
dies are different (see the alignment of the U in AUSTRALIA and the Ns in PENNY
with respect to the rim embellishment). The Perth coin occurs in two varieties;
the common one uses a newer (type 9) obverse whereas the less common was struck
with the same obverse as the Melbourne coins.

Perth issues, P55P.8I and P56P.9I The variety with the type 8 obverse is not as common as the one with the newer
type 9 obverse but it is by no means scarce. In 2000 I counted 149 Perth pennies
and found 61 had the older obverse. |
