All the Australian pennies of the five-year period spanning 1944 to 1948 were
struck from tools originating from the 1938 London masters. The mints at Melbourne
and Perth shared the task of striking pennies during this period and the Perth strikes
can be distinguished from those of Melbourne by the presence of a dot after the
Y in PENNY on the reverse. The working dies for Perth were prepared in Melbourne.
The mint mark was added by hand to the working dies prior to hardening so there
is some variation in the position and size of the dot.
