YOU ARE Commander of the starship ENTERPRISE, with a mission to seek and destroy a fleet of KLINGON warships (from about 8-25) which is menacing the United Federation of Planets. You have a certain number of stardates in which to complete your mission. There are one to four Federation STARBASEs for resupplying your ship. You will be assigned a starting position somewhere in the galaxy, which is divided into an 8X8 quadrant grid. The astronomical name of each quadrant will identify it. Each quadrant too is divided into an 8X8 grid. On a section map, these symbols apply: o ENTERPRISE S STARBASE ! KLINGON * STAR You have eight possible commands: Navigate the starship by setting course and engine speed: Warp engine control - course is a circular arrangement of numerical vectors with integer or real values (1, 2, 2.5, 5.4 etc.) up to 9 (equivalent to 1). One warp factor is the size of one quadrant - to go from quadrant 5:5 to quadrant 6:5, steer Course 3, Warp Factor 1. 4 3 2 . . . . . . COURSE 5----*----1 . . . . . . 6 7 8 Short range sensor scan (one quadrant) Long range sensor scan (nine quadrants). Coded as ###, where units = stars, tens = starbases and hundreds = KLINGONs. Phaser control (energy gun), used to shoot at the KLINGONs (also have phasers). Torpedo course data: the same as used in warp engine control. A hit KLINGON is destroyed and cannot return fire. A missed KLINGON will return fire. You are generally subject to phaser attack by all KLINGONs in your quadrant. The computer may be used to determine torpedo courses. Energy shield control (protection from phaser attack). These require energy to be deployed from the ship's supply. Damage and state-of-repair report. A negative state-of-repair indicates temporary damage. Call computer. Here you have six options: A: Cumulative galactic record - the results of all previous short and long range scans. B: Status report - the number of KLINGONs, STARBASEs and stardates remaining. C: Torpedo data - directions and distance to all KLINGONs in your quadrant. D: STARBASE navigation data - direction and distance to any STARBASE in your quadrant. E: Direction/distance calculator - allows you to specify coordinates for travel. F: Galactic region map - prints the names of the sixteen major galactic regions. Certain reports on the ship's status are made by crew members (Spock, Uhura, Chekhov et al.). KLINGONs are mobile within their quadrants. If you try to manoeuvre on them, they will move and fire on you. Firing and damage notes: a. Phaser fire diminishes with increased distance between combatants. b. If a KLINGON zaps you sufficiently hard (cf. your shield strength), some part of the ship will suffer (indicated by a damage control report). c. If you do not hit a KLINGON sufficiently hard (cf. its shield strength), you will cause no damage. You sensors will report this. d. Damage Control will let you know when out- of-commission devices have been repaired. Your engines will automatically shut down if you try to leave the galaxy, or if you try to manoeuvre through a star, a STARBASE or a KLINGON warship. If you miscalculate slightly, some shield control energy will automatically be diverted to warp engine control (if your shields are operational). While you are docked at a STARBASE, a team of technicians can repair your ship, if you are willing to wait - remember, repairmen always underestimate the time taken! If you destroy a STARBASE, you get a nasty note from Starfleet Command. It you destroy your last STARBASE, you will be relieved of command!
