@CENTER(@B[Perfect Writer Notes] from Clergy Kug, December 1985) I learn a little more about Perfect Writer almost every day. It is one of the most fascinating and powerful tools I have ever come across. One of my "oft faced" problems is getting WordStar files formatted and ready to print with Perfect Writer. Nearly every article that has come to me from you has been written in WordStar. Its just not my thing. I'm a 'perfect' man, all the way. (pun intended) When WordStar files are received they have often been formatted and are ready to print as is. However when looking at such a file on screen the user notices immediately many "bare spots" where WS has skipped spaces in order to justify the right hand margin. If I', to correctly format such a file with PW, I must get rid of those "bare spots". To the rescue comes PW's powerful "Search and Replace" feature. It is a gem! A quick [ESC]-R and the screen asks for the string I want to replace. A second touch of the [ESC] key and I', asked for the string I wish to use as a replacement. It is easy to straighten up those WS files by carefully entering "spaces". That's right, "space". At the first command, I tell the program I wish to replace double spaces (touch space bar twice) then at the second command I choose to replace the double spaces with single spaces (touch the space bar once). Then another [ESC] a moment of whirrs and buzzes and you can actually see the file "tighten up" on the screen. One pass may not do it. Some of those white spaces may have 4 or more spaces. Do the same thing again. And with a little patience, all "bare spots" are removed, and I'm ready to read the whole thing into Perfect Writer, format it and print it out. PW's "Search and Replace" is a powerful, useful feature. [Editor's note: I tried this on the following story and it works great, but if you happen to own both WordStar and PW there is also another way. With your WordStar disk open the document file. Give the command ^OJ to turn off justification and then reformat the entire document with ^QQB. The file will no longer have the awkward spaces to delete with Perfect Writer.].
